Brazil's retail sales continued their impressive recovery in July. Sharp contrast with Mexico, which was trailing most EMs in June. Good news for Brazil but a full recovery from the two recessions since 2014 will be really difficult, especially having to do fiscal consolidation.

SAO PAULO--Brazil's central bank left its benchmark Selic lending rate unchanged at a record low Wednesday amid concern about the government's fiscal situation and as the country's economy recovers more quickly than expected from the coronavirus crisis.
The policy committee left the Selic at 2%, the first time in 10 meetings the bank didn't cut the rate. The central bank maintained its guidance that there's little, if any, space for more cuts to the Selic and that it won't reduce monetary stimulus unless inflation starts to heat up. RTRS

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Approximately 11,000 employees of Brazilian state-run oil company Petrobras have accepted buyout packages and will leave the firm this year or next, Chief Executive Roberto Castello Branco said during an online event on Thursday.
That number, which represents about a quarter of the company's workforce, is a slight increase from the 10,000 employees that Castello Branco had said in July would depart Petroleo Brasileiro SA, as the company is formally known.

Sept 21 (Reuters) - The United States will expand a quota for Brazilian sugar to be imported at a lower tax rate by 80,000 tonnes, in exchange for South America's largest country opening to more U.S. ethanol, Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday.
Bolsonaro's post on Twitter comes after Brazil on Sept. 11 said it would extend a tariff-free quota for U.S. ethanol by three months.

SAO PAULO--Brazil recorded a current-account surplus of $3.7 billion in August, from a surplus of $1.6 billion in July, the country's central bank said Wednesday.
The 12-month current-account deficit reached $25.4 billion in August, from a revised $32.2 billion the month before, the bank said.
The 12-month current-account deficit was equal to 1.6% of gross domestic product, versus 2.0% of GDP reported for the previous month.
Net foreign direct investment reached $1.4 billion in August, down from $2.7 billion in July, the bank said. FDI reached $54.5 billion for the 12 months through August, compared with $62.6 billion in the 12 months through July. RTRS
