- Comex gold futures prices ended the U.S. day session solidly lower in a volatile trading session Wednesday. Gold was first supported and then pressured by the latest news to come from the U.S. Federal Reserve. Comex June gold last traded down $17.40 at $1,360.30 an ounce. Spot gold was last quoted down $14.30 at $1,362.25. July Comex silver last traded down $0.075 at $22.38 an ounce.

The market place, including the gold and silver markets, were buffeted Wednesday by
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s prepared text and speech on the economy and monetary policy before the Congress. Bernanke in his prepared text before actually speaking to Congress led the market place to believe he is still fully in the dove’s camp and that he wants the present bond-buying program (QE3) to continue in the coming months. However, when asked a question by a member of Congress, Bernanke answered that the bond-buying program could be “tapered” as soon as the next couple of FOMC meetings, which would take place this summer.

While Bernanke proverbially spoke out of both sides of his mouth on U.S. money policy Wednesday, the heavier emphasis was placed on his mention that the winding down of QE3 sooner rather than later bore the greater weight, according to the market place. It appears the sense of the market place at present is that QE3 will start to be wound down in the coming months, based upon some better U.S. economic data the past several weeks. That’s a bearish factor for the raw commodity markets.

Gold rallied to the session high on the release of Bernanke’s prepared text, but then quickly sold off when the Fed chief mentioned that tapering is possible. Gold prices had been holding moderate gains ahead of the Bernanke speech to Congress.

The Wednesday afternoon release of the Fed’s FOMC meeting minutes from six weeks ago was a mixed bag, with some FOMC members wanting to end QE3 sooner and others wanted to extend it for quite some time to come. The minutes also noted the improvement in recent U.S. economic data. Gold prices weakened further following the FOMC minutes’ release.

The U.S. dollar index rallied on the fresh Fed news Wednesday, and is presently hovering near a 9.5-month high. The stronger greenback has also been significantly bearish for the raw commodity sector.

Gold has failed to break above the $1,400 level as equity markets edge higher once again. Equity futures this morning indicate that US markets are likely to open firmer, following European markets higher. The correlation between the S&P and the gold price since the start of the year has been high at -0.85. The strong equity performance should continue to cap gold.

In the options market there is still plenty of activity around the $1,400 and $1,450 strikes — especially on the puts side. This
should add additional technical resistance to the metal.

With gold pushing lower, silver is yet again under pressure. We maintain that rallies are likely to be sold into on the back of
weak fundamentals.
The latest Swiss customs data confirms our view that Russian exports of the metal remain price sensitive. April exports have
declined after large volumes of the metal was shipped to Switzerland in March. However, palladium averaged $759 in March
and only $705 in April ....

Gold support is at $1,358 and $1,326. Resistance is at $1,400 and $1,419.

Silver support is at $22.08 and $21.58, resistance is at $23.22 and $23.85.

Platinum support is at $1,450 and $1,438. Resistance is at $1,483 and $1,504. Palladium support is at $736 and resistance at
$748.

(Kitco News) - Comex gold futures are trading with solid losses in late-morning dealings Friday, on this last trading day of the month. Some stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data released Friday morning has boosted the U.S. dollar index and in turn put selling pressure into the gold market. The University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey posted a strong reading in May, while the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index also rose in May from April. August gold last traded down $18.00 an ounce at $1,393.00.

Gold is edging towards $1,300. It could test this level but we expect it to encounter
strong resistance here ahead of COMEX option expiry next week. Besides this level providing psychologically resistance, recent trends indicate that physical demand from China eases
above $1,300. Should physical demand remain strong, and gold manages to breach $1,300,
we would look for resistance on approach of $1,310 — and thereafter, $1,340.

The base metals have had a mixed start to the day with copper and nickel trading sideways
to higher while the rest of the complex fading ahead of US trade in spite of a weaker dollar.
Turnover has been pretty dire, and with little else to go on the metals are seemingly in tickover mode as they drift into the summer.

Palladium is sticking to the $730 level, possibly attracted by the increase in August call volumes on NYMEX with a strike at $730. Expiry of the contract is tomorrow.
Palladium remains the only precious metal that is trading above its 200day MA, which currently sits at $703.

Crude oil markets are still being buoyed by geopolitical concerns, largely shrugging of yesterday’s disappointing US retails sales numbers. Front-month WTI gained 37c/bbl to close at
$106.32/bbl, while the front-month Brent contract closed at $109.09/bbl, up 28c/bbl on the
day.
