Specie Glencore....

The UK’s Serious Fraud Office has opened an investigation into Swiss mining company Glencore over “suspicions of bribery”.

The SFO said it was investigating the “conduct of business by the Glencore group of companies, its officials, employees, agents and associated persons” but did not comment further on any specific allegations.

In May last year Glencore’s shares fell by more than 7 per cent in a day after it emerged that the UK anti-fraud body was looking at its dealings with its former business partner in the Democratic Republic of Congo Dan Gertler, who had recently been sanctioned by the US.

The SFO’s probe followed its long-running investigation into Kazakh ENRC — which has formed one of its most complex investigations — and was a setback for the miner.

Mr Gertler was sanctioned by the US in December 2017 for alleged “opaque and corrupt mining and oil deals” in DRC. The businessman previously owned stakes in Glencore projects in the country before Glencore bought him out in 2017.

It emerged last year that the SFO was considering a formal investigation into the work of Glencore, Mr Gertler and the president of DRC.

Glencore is the largest western mining company operating in DRC, which is Africa’s biggest copper producer and the source of half of the world’s cobalt. However it has been grappling with a string of issues in the country and in Zambia, which recently contributed to sharp drop in half-year profits.

The SFO investigation is the latest high-profile inquiry for the SFO, which came under fire earlier this year for dropping several of its major investigations, including into Rolls-Royce and GlaxoSmithKline.
