Turkey’s central bank took another step to boost its coffers by raising the amount of foreign currency lenders are required to park at the regulator as reserves.
The monetary authority increased reserve requirements for foreign-exchange deposits by 200 basis points, according to a statement on Monday. The measures will withdraw around $4.2 billion of liquidity from the market, it said.
Data last week showed that Turkey’s net international reserves droppedto the lowest level since October as concerns linger that the central bank is trying to prop up the lira before elections next month. It’s unnerved investors by failing to give a clear explanation on what’s behind the recent moves in its reserves.
The central bank also introduced a new swap on May 9 that will allow it to bolster its international reserves by borrowing gold from commercial lenders. Bloomberg

(Tua)

A top Turkish official suggested for the first time that the delivery of a Russian missile-defense system may take place later than planned, possibly giving more time to avoid a looming confrontation with the U.S.
“It may not happen in June but it will come in the upcoming months,” Defense Minister Hulusi Akar told Haberturk television late Monday. “The process has started.”
The delivery of the missiles was originally scheduled for July but Russiaoffered to bring it forward by one month, according to Turkey. It was unclear why and for how long their arrival is postponed. Ankara last week said it was working with Washington to determine a date for a possible visit by U.S. President Donald Trump, probably in July.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously rebuffed American demands that Turkey delay the purchase of the S-400s, a deal that’s angered the Trump administration and prompted threats of tough sanctions. Akar said Turkey would complete its evaluation of the latest U.S. proposal to sell its Patriot air-defense system by October or November.
The U.S. threatened to sanction Ankara if it completed the purchase of the batteries, which it says could collect intelligence on the stealth capabilities of the next generation F-35 warplanes. It’s also warned that Turkey could be expelled from the fighter jet’s development program.
Akar wouldn’t comment on speculation that Turkey could purchase Russia’s fifth-generation Su-57 warplane instead. Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) Turkey’s industrial giants are struggling to keep a lid on soaring finance expenses that are threatening to engulf operating income as the lira’s depreciation pushes up foreign-borrowing costs.
Istanbul’s top 500 industrial firms, which together account for almost half of the nation’s exports, reported finance expenses of 95.8 billion lira ($16 billion) last year, compared with 35.2 billion liras in 2017, according to Istanbul Chamber of Industry Chairman Erdal Bahcivan. The ratio of financial costs to operating profits almost doubled to 88.9%, he said.“Unfortunately, the erosion that financial costs are creating on balance sheets isn’t sustainable, no matter how successful operating profits are," Bahcivan told reporters at the release of the organization’s annual report on Tuesday. “Turkey should stick to financial stability and starting from inflation, all macro indicators should go back to normal as soon as possible."

The lira fell to a record low against the dollar in August amid rising political tensions with the U.S. and as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration fueled a lending spree in a failed bid to avoid the economy tipping into a recession. As a result, the corporate sector is scurrying to restructure debt as their foreign-exchange liabilities exceed those of assets denominated in other currencies.
  • While operating income of the 500 companies increased 53% in 2018, the improvement in net profit was limited to 20%, mostly because of higher financing expenses
  • The average debt-to-equity ratio of the firms soared to a record high of 67%
  • The share of short-term financial debt to total debt rose to 45.3% last year from 41.9% in 2017
