Ahead of the Bell: Intel upgraded by Piper Jaffray
September 30, 2008 8:00 AM
a Piper Jaffray analyst upgraded the stock to "Buy," calling it a "sound investment in an uncertain world."
Piper Jaffray analyst Auguste P. Richard raised his rating on the Santa Clara, Calif., company from "Neutral" and kept his $22 price target for the stock in a Tuesday note. The analyst cited Intel's solid competitive position, healthy balance sheet and cash flow generation and its low valuation.
"While we don't think Intel is immune from the economic environment, we believe our third-quarter and fourth-quarter estimates are likely conservative," he said.
Richard expects third-quarter earnings of 35 cents per share on revenue of $10.2 billion and fourth-quarter earnings of 41 cents per share on $10.5 billion in revenue.
In July, Intel projected third-quarter revenue of $10 billion to $10.6 billion.
The analyst added that while checks indicated some PC supply chain cancellations, the company is still running its chip fabs "at nearly full capacity."
This is good for the company's margins, Richard said, even though Intel "has taken its foot off the gas very recently."
The analyst also thinks that Intel's Atom processor for low-cost laptops "is likely to expand the PC market more than it cannibalizes the company's existing business."
Intel shares added 63 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $17.90 in premarket trading.
